Thinking about
“Time” from various perspectives

Seiko is conducting the Seiko Exciting Time & Timepieces School, a special class where our employees visit elementary schools.
“Time” is an invisible common language that connects people and societies around the world.
Seiko continues this activity in the hope that the children will enjoy and feel
the importance of “discovering” the wisdom of our ancestors who created methods of knowing the time.
We also want children to learn the fascination with Time and clocks by experiencing the technology, real world functions, and craftsmanship involved in timepieces.
Hopefully, children will create their own rich time, working together with others to enjoy what the future holds.

Lecture

History of timepieces

In the beginning of the lecture, students will learn about the history and roles of different kinds of timepieces. Clocks, which are useful in many aspects of our daily lives, are not natural; they were created by humans. What kind of quest did humankind undertake in order to understand the concept of Time? In this lecture, children will learn about the evolution of ancient time measurement, starting with the first timepiece, a sundial created roughly 7,000 years ago.

Experience

10 second experiment

If the timepieces we take for granted today were to disappear, how would we be able to measure time? We will conduct an experiment to create an accurate 10-second measure of time using everyday objects such as a scrubbing brush, sand, water, string, and a tape measure. Based on the results of the experiment, students will learn the law of producing accurate time (cycles x number).

Experience

Pendulum and clock

Students will learn about the history of humankind’s quest to create more accurate clocks, how the “isochronism of the pendulum,” which is taught in 5th grade science courses, led to the creation of accurate clocks, and how they evolved into portable timepieces and then increasingly accurate timepieces.

Experience

Inside a mechanical watch

Students will use a magnifying glass to see the movements of the tiny parts that make up a mechanical watch. By learning the names and seeing the number of parts in a sample watch, they will come to understand the complex mechanism that makes an accurate timepiece such a rare item. They will also set the time on a mechanical watch and learn about the structure and different types of watches that exist.

Experience

Watchmaker experience

Students will come to understand first-hand the the exceptional manual skills of a master watchmaker who operates within the intricate micro-structure of a mechanical watch. The students will play a game, using tweezers to pick up the same kind of small screws used in mechanical watches and inserting them into a tiny hole with a diameter of less than 1 mm. They will compete to see who can insert the most screws in 30 seconds.

VOICE Participant’s Voice

We receive lots of
positive feedback.

Student’s voices

Photo of students
  • “I enjoyed learning about the different types of clock mechanisms, such as how a pendulum clock won’t work if it's set at an angle.”
  • “I learned for the first time that Seiko has created many firsts in watchmaking, both first in Japan and in the world. I was especially surprised to learn that Japan’s first wristwatch was made in Sumida Ward.”
  • “I use a watch all the time, but I hadn’t ever stopped to think how important they are. Today’s class helped me learn the importance of timepieces.”
  • “I always wasted 10 minutes before I could get motivated to do my homework. Now I want to use my time more productively, like use those 10 minutes to study or read a book. I want to make the most of my time.

Teacher’s voices

“The students were having a great time.”

“When I told them we were going to have a class on timepieces, they said, ‘You can see the time on your smartphone!’”
“But I think today’s class helped them understand the importance of measuring time by learning about clock mechanisms and how they work.”

“At school, we have a timetable, and of course, classes are held within the allotted time.”
“Each student has his or her own favorite subjects, but I would like to teach them how to make the most of the time they have and how to use it effectively.”
