A sundial representing
the evolution of Life

Seiko Jellyfish Sundial Exhibition

Let us consider two very different topics — jellyfish and the Sun. Jellyfish emerged at a very early stage of life on Earth, and it is said that they are one of the predecessors of all living beings. The Sun is essential for the growth of life as we know it. The sundial was humanity's first clock, and it, too, is fundamental to the evolution of human life.
We were inspired to combine these two disparate elements that were so important to life and to human evolution, and so we created a “jellyfish sundial” expressly for the Osaka-Kansai Expo. It will be prominently displayed at the "Playground of Life: Jellyfish Pavilion."

Humanity and Time Workshop

Toki-iku - Making a Sundial

We will also hold the sundial edition of the "Seiko Exciting Clock Classroom" at the Osaka-Kansai Expo.
This workshop will explore the theme of "humanity and Time." By building a sundial, the first timepiece ever created by humans, participants will learn about how people have engaged with time throughout history and how that changed their lives. We will also encourage all participants to think about their own future.

Workshop Content

Seiko Exciting Classroom

Introductory Lecture

1. About Time and Celestial Bodies

Learn about the history and function of clocks. What have humans done in the quest to understand time? Learn about the evolution and history of ancient time measurement using natural forces, starting with the sundial, which was developed 7,000 years ago.

2. Make Your Own Sundial

After learning about the mechanics of sundials, participants will have a chance to build their own, unique sundial. We will present an original Expo version sundial.

Experiment

3. Sundial Experiment on the Lawn of the Jellyfish Pavilion

Finally, we will move to the lawn of the "Playground of Life: Jellyfish Pavilion" and experiment with the sundials everyone has made! The best way to understand how a sundial “moves” with the sun is to observe one in operation.
