Behind the Scenes of Seiko’s New Commercial “A TRUE MOMENT”

Seiko’s new commercial is called “A TRUE MOMENT,” which refers to the split second when a new athletic record is set. The filming took place over two days at a stadium in the suburbs of Tokyo. Early on the morning of the first day, members of the Seiko Timing Team — who are responsible for timekeeping at major athletic events — installed an assortment of timekeeping and measuring devices around the running track, the long jump sandpit, the high jump mat, and the throwing field. These were not sample devices, but actual timing equipment that Seiko uses at international competitions.

Filming scenes for the new commercial

Filming also took place at an indoor swimming pool adjacent to the stadium, where similar devices used for swimming events were installed. To heighten the reality of A TRUE MOMENT, real track and swimming athletes, as well as extras playing spectators, participated in the shoot. Some scenes were filmed after sunset in low light. In order to recreate the demanding conditions under which competitions sometimes take place, water was sprayed around the timekeeping equipment to simulate rain. Although each shot lasts only a few seconds on screen, a great deal of time was spent preparing the equipment and rehearsing each scene, with multiple retakes done until the team was fully satisfied. Every moment was captured with loving care to bring the concept of A TRUE MOMENT to life.

Akiteru Inamura from the Corporate Branding Department, who oversaw the production of the new commercial, commented on the concept:

Inamura:
“What matters most to us is that the numbers shown on Seiko’s timekeeping and measurement devices are always accurate. That responsibility is our top priority, which you will see on display as Seiko prepares for the world’s top track and field competition, the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025. But our role goes beyond providing precise timekeeping. The moment when a record is captured is emotionally moving. It may become a vivid memory for spectators or it may become a legend, it may even shape an era in sport. We see timekeeping and measurement devices as tools for sharing that emotional impact of sports. The concept of A TRUE MOMENT expresses this story — how the equipment we’ve prepared so thoroughly captures the essence of each moment, and helps create other moments of inspiration and historical significance.”

Adjusting the starting blocks

One striking aspect of this new commercial is how the timekeeping and measuring devices themselves are in the spotlight. During filming, much attention was paid to how these devices — performing inconspicuously alongside the athletes — could be portrayed in a memorable and powerful way. Regarding the decision to focus on these often-overlooked devices, Inamura commented:

Athletes in motion

Inamura:
“We spend a long time preparing our equipment before a competition. To spectators, it may all appear mechanical or lifeless, but we breathe life into those devices. And when the competition begins, they’re working just as hard as the athletes, but without the glory. We hope viewers will appreciate how we’ve shown the essential role that these devices play in track and field, swimming, and lots of other events.”

Crew reviewing the footage

What Seiko hopes to convey through this new commercial is its desire to deliver moments of joy and inspiration to all those who watch the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships. To achieve that, the company is committed to preparing just as seriously as the athletes themselves.

“We hope that those who watch this new commercial will understand and feel the spirit behind Seiko’s Group Purpose: ‘Through our unceasing pursuit of innovation, we aim to deliver trust and inspiration to society, and create a future full of smiles around the world.’ At the Championships, we will not only cheer for each athlete’s performance, but also act as their partner — faithfully recording each moment of critical competition,” said Inamura. “We would be delighted if Seiko’s support of sporting events such as the World Athletics Championships helps more people to discover the emotional richness available through sports.”
