Timing Systems

A wide variety of time displays are set up including on every 5 km point and control gates: The accurate current time and time that has elapsed since the start are displayed.

The start gate

Behind the scenes

In the early morning of the day of the marathon, the time display is installed to the starter's platform which is set to the start gate.
The position and angle are adjusted by several members of the staff for installation.

At the event

With a flashlight and a crack sound from a starter pistol, the time display placed at the start line begins counting.

Marathon controllers

Behind the scenes

Under the starter's platform, there is an array of equipment that controls the time displays. They are referred to as "the guardian of records."

At the event

Marathon controllers control the display of times. Because they receive precise time information using GPS and control the time displays based on the information, the displays connected to the marathon controllers can show the exact same time in spite of their separate locations.
